Intro
Tech Takes the Wheel, Oil Slides, and Bitcoin Eyes $100K
Wall Street continues its record-breaking streak
The Dow Jones Industrial Average broke the 45,000 ceiling, soaring +308.51 points (+0.69%) to close at 45,014, while the S&P 500 gained +36.61 points (+0.61%) to hit 6,086, and the Nasdaq skyrocketed +254.21 points (+1.30%) to 19,735.
Even the small-cap Russell 2000 joined the party, adding +10.21 points (+0.42%) to 2,426.
Tech continued to dominate, with big names like AMZN and NFLX hitting fresh highs. Meanwhile, the S&P futures extended their streak to 12 straight higher highs since November 18. In the crypto world, Bitcoin surged late in the day, flirting with the $100K milestone.
But it wasn’t all sunshine: Oil prices dipped, and lighter trading volumes hinted at some caution as the year-end rally barrels forward.
Economic Data: Mixed Bag but Still Bullish
Private Payrolls: November added 146,000 jobs, just shy of the 150K estimate. October’s number was revised down to 184,000 from an earlier 233,000.
Factory Orders: October orders excluding transportation rose a modest +0.1%, while durable goods orders were revised up to +0.3%.
ISM Services PMI: Slipped to 52.1, below expectations of 55.5, signaling slower expansion in the services sector.
Mortgage Rates: Fell to 6.69%, fueling a +5.6% jump in purchase applications, while refinance activity dipped -0.6%.
The Fed’s Beige Book reported modest economic growth, with electricity demand driven by data center expansion. Inflation? Still tame across districts.
Fed Chair Powell: "Cautiously Optimistic"
At the NYT DealBook Summit, Powell said the Fed is focused on "supporting the labor market" while moving cautiously toward neutral rates. With downside risks now less acute, the door remains open for a 25 bps rate cut at the December meeting.
Commodities & Currencies: Oil Slips, Gold Steady, Bitcoin Rockets
Crude Oil: WTI fell -$1.40 (-2%) to $68.54, while Brent dipped -1.78% to $72.31 as U.S. crude production hit a record 13.513M bpd, and OPEC+ deliberations loomed.
Gold: Added $8.30 to $2,676.20/oz, buoyed by safe-haven demand amid geopolitical uncertainties.
Bitcoin: Rallied late, crossing $98,500, with bulls eyeing the coveted $100K mark. Optimism surged after President-elect Donald Trump announced plans for pro-crypto SEC leadership.
Sector Highlights: Winners and Losers
Retail:
Dollar Tree (DLTR): Beat Q3 earnings expectations, delivering $1.12 EPS (vs. $1.08 est.) on $7.56B revenue. Family Dollar remains under review.
Foot Locker (FL): Fell after cutting FY25 guidance, citing soft consumer spending and higher promotions.
Mattel (MAT): Rallied on strong Black Friday sales and optimism about price hikes offsetting potential tariff impacts.
Autos:
Ford (F): November sales rose +14.3%, with trucks up +22.5%. However, F-150 Lightning EV sales fell -17.5%, reflecting ongoing challenges in the EV space.
Tesla (TSLA): Outperformed on better scale economics, dodging California’s EV tax credit woes more deftly than Rivian (RIVN) or Lucid (LCID).
Energy:
Crescent Energy (CRGY): Announced a $905M acquisition of Eagle Ford assets. Shares slipped on news of a secondary offering.
Rare Earths: Stocks like MP Materials (MP) surged after China’s export ban on key minerals escalated tensions with the U.S.
Tech:
Salesforce (CRM): Popped on stronger-than-expected revenue growth and enthusiasm over its new AI product, Agentforce.
Okta (OKTA): Beat Q3 estimates with $665M revenue (+19% YoY) and raised its FY guidance.
Pure Storage (PSTG): Jumped after landing a hyperscale win with a top cloud provider, marking a major milestone.
Biotech & Pharma:
Eli Lilly (LLY): Claimed victory in the weight-loss wars with its Zepbound drug, showing a 20.2% weight loss compared to 13.7% for Wegovy. Shares soared.
Novavax (NVAX): Sold its Czech manufacturing facility for $200M, cutting costs by $80M/year.
Bottom Line: Riding the Year-End Wave
The markets keep defying gravity, led by relentless tech strength and Bitcoin’s moonshot rally. With the Fed signaling caution, rate cuts in play, and a record 55th all-time high for the S&P 500, the bulls are firmly in control.
